WordPress
The University recommends WordPress as the content management system for most cases. We provide a few different options for getting your site live, and have collected some resources that may be helpful to you.
What is WordPress?
WordPress is software designed for everyone, emphasizing accessibility, performance, security, and ease of use. We believe great software should work with minimum set up, so you can focus on sharing your story, product, or services freely. – WordPress.org
WordPress is a free and fully featured content management system that allows you to build a website with no programming experience. NC State University has selected WordPress as it’s recommended platform for communicating our mission and successes to the world.
NC State’s configuration of WordPress — no matter who on campus that you choose to host with — comes with several customizations that make life easier for web managers and users. For example, you can easily (and automatically) maintain profile pages for your team, and restrict some pages to students or groups of faculty and staff. University Communications manages a theme designed to make your site look beautiful and on brand, as well.
Comparing Your WordPress Options
In addition to the Find The Right Service for You tool on our home page, we have developed a matrix that will let you see at a glance which benefits each of our WordPress hosting options have. You can also see a list of all of our options — including those that are not WordPress related — in our Service Offerings.
Training and Help
University Trainings and Workshops
OIT Design and Web Services regularly offers training sessions and workshops to learn the fundamentals of WordPress. These trainings are typically conducted virtually and are offered via the REPORTER system.
WordPress Community Documentation
WordPress.com also offers a great training module on their website designed towards people who are just getting started with building their website. This documentation does not contain content that is geared towards the NC State community, but is a helpful starting point.
Contact IT Support
If you have other questions, you can always contact your unit’s IT support group, or the group that hosts your website. If you’re not sure of who you should contact, we encourage you to check the campus contact list hosted by the Office of Information Technology.
